Infrastructure Today and Tomorrow

Each piece of transport infrastructure is equivalent to a large, long term investment. This alone makes it important to be aware of the economic, as well as social and demographic environment the money is put into. But for a well aimed and sustainable investment in-depth understanding of these processes is truly indispensable.

Main research questions:

  • In what way will demographic, structural and technological developments affect the transport infrastructure in Germany and in Europe?

  • What design will make roads, rails or train stations “fit for the future”? Does sustainable infrastructure mean the same in different regions?

  • Which ways of providing mobility services exist in different regions? And which of these are most likely to perform well economically under conditions of changing demographics and cuts in public spending?

  • How can we make sure that the infrastructure we build today will be up to the transport of tomorrow?

  • Which macro economic effects do investments into transport infrastructure produce (directly or indirectly)?

  • What are the options for improving the management of intermodal nodes? Can rail station managers learn from airport managers or vice versa?
