Mobility in Change

National and international transport markets are heading for a change, as political, social, environmental and technological trends all jostle to influence their future shape. In the programm “Mobility in Change”, we investigate the most significant of these influences, so called megatrends. In our output analyses we describe their future consequences, develop a range of different scenarios and point to risks as well as opportunities and down-to-earth policy options.

Main research questions:

  • What short, medium and long term developments will we see in mobility generally and transport markets specifically (in Germany and internationally)? How will they both be affected by demographic, social, political, ecological, economic, structural and technological changes? What, for example, will be the volume of passenger transport in Germany in 2030, who will be the passengers and where will they go?

  • What new habits are people forming with regard to mobility today? What demands will future generations put on transport systems, how much money will they be able to spend on transport and what will transport costs be? How can service providers accommodate this, or even use this to gain customers? Which of all the many innovations have to be taken into account, which are less significant?

  • Which research methods paint the clearest picture of our mobile future? How can the effects of several megatrends be combined to form consistent scenarios for the future?
